KEIKO WALKERは日本とイギリスの血を受け、横浜に生まれる。カントリー・ミュージック・シーンで十代から歌い始めていたが、85年にKeiko Walker & The Hot Street Bandを結成し本格的な活動を開始している。その当初、ボーカル・スタイルや選曲から和製エミルー・ハリスの誉れが高く、若手が不毛だった当時の日本のカントリー界において、はつらつとしたカントリー・ロック・スタイルの歌と演奏でたちまち人気者となった。レイ・プライス、チャーリー・マッコイ、ジェームズ・バートンなど本場アメリカのミュージシャンとの共演も果たす。
1993年アルバム「RED IS THE ROSE」でレコードデビュー。現在はKEIKO WALKER BANDを率いてのバンド演奏、もしくは少人数編成でのアコースティックな演奏の二刀流で自身のライブを展開している。そんな彼女のライブにおいて、ここ数年イギリス、アイルランド、スコットランドのトラディショナル・ソングを多く取り上げたり、また従来からのレパートリーにもアレンジ面でそういった音楽のテイストを加えたりするなど、音楽性の変化が感じられていた。
2004年アルバム”BOTH SIDES NOW”をリリース。このアルバムはケイコ・ウォーカーのセカンド・ソロ・アルバムとなる。ファースト・アルバム”RED IS THE ROSE”(93年)以降、ミニ・アルバム”LOVE SONGS”(97年)や、SHIME(シメ)とのユニットBROKEN ASHESでのアルバム”BROKEN ASHES”(99年)をリリースしていたが、ケイコ・ウォーカー名義のフル・アルバムとしては11年ぶりということになる。
このアルバムを一言で表現しようとすると、ブリティッシュもしくはケルティックなフォーク・ロック作品ということになろう。しかしながら、スティーヴィー・ニクスのフリートウッド・マック時代のヒット曲‘ＲHIANNON’を取り入れるなど、一筋縄でいかない選曲がなされている。またトラディショナル・ソングをロック・ビートに乗せた’MATTY GROVE’は大胆不敵だし、全体的にはアコースティックなアレンジが多いが、静かなグルーブが脈々と息づいている。彼女が自分のルーツに開眼したことで、現在の音楽性を築くことができたと言えるだろう。このアルバムにおいても、フェアポート・コンベンションを連想させるブリティッシュ・フォーク・ロック・サウンドが聴かれるのが興味深い。
”BOTH SIDES NOW”では唯一無二のケイコ・ウォーカー・ワールドが広がっている。それは、音楽性のみならず、言葉やその背景にある精神性までをパーソナルなものとして消化することで成し遂げたものである。タイトル曲はジョニ・ミッチェルの代表的なナンバーのひとつであるが、ケイコ・ウォーカーはBOTH SIDES NOWという言葉に、自分の内側にある「天使」と「魔女」の二面性をかけていると言う。このアルバムを聴き通せば、なるほどと思うだろう。優しさの中に、どこか妖艶な雰囲気と情念が感じられる。それは彼女の歩んできた人生、そして音楽のキャリアの現時点での集大成と言ってよいだろう。もちろん、これからも彼女は成長していくだろうし、もっと変化していくのかもしれない。しかし、”Both Sides Now”には、人間的にも音楽的にも成長したケイコ・ウォーカーの今の姿がある。そこには自信が満ち溢れ、また同時にある種心機一転的な初々しさも感じさせる。色々な意味で興味深い作品となっているのである。このアルバムを一言で表現しようとすると、ブリティッシュもしくはケルティックなフォーク・ロック作品ということになろう。

+++ENGLISH PROFILE+++ Born February 17, in Yokohama, Japan, Keiko Walker is of Japanese-British descent. She was influenced early in life by her mother's love of country music and by her uncle, who was a country music performer in Japan.
From an early age, Keiko dreamed of being a country music singer herself. At the age of 16 she was discovered by a Japanese country band, "The Texas Company", in the early 1980's and was asked to join the band.
Her style has developed over the years to include various influences and sounds from country, rock, bluegrass and folk to Celtic. But no one has been more influential in Keiko's musical style than Emmylou Harris, who Keiko once traveled across U.S. state lines for all night trying to locate where the singer was performing.
In 1986, Keiko formed her own group, "Keiko Walker & The Hot Street Band", taking a cue from Emmylou's former band, "The Hot Band"."Keiko Walker & The Hot Street Band" have gone on to become one of the most popular country music bands in Japan and perform regularly throughout the country.
Keiko Walker, who performs only in English, has also been a special guest at several large concerts and was invited to perform at a huge, televised rock concert in Sendai, Japan, where they captured the hearts of many young rock fans.
In 1993, Keiko and her band were invited to perform at the Bluegrass Folk Festival held in Guam, which benefited the Guam Symphony Society.
In 1995, Keiko released her first recording, "Red is the Rose". In the recording, she covers a wide range of songs, from The Carter Family, The Beatles, Ry Cooder to Traditional tunes. All of the songs were arranged byKeiko Walker and Walker's long-time musical partner Noriaki Hayashi, who is also the manager and bass player for the Hot Street Band.
In 1997, she released a mini album with 3 songs. "Love Songs" is a compilation of 3 ballads including a track written by Sandy Denny called"Take away the load" which is Walker's favorite tune.
In 1999, Walker has released a duet album with singer Shime titled "Broken Ashes".
Walker's newest album "BOTH SIDES NOW" has been released in July 2004.
